According to my sources, Berlin was the first fire service anywhere to develop the concept of the rescue pump water tender, and this 1984 Mercedes was indeed the first prototype. In their continuing quest to innovate, Berlin was one of the first to buy a Rosenbauer electric fire pump, which has now been in service for well over a year. It was not their first hybrid. As early as 1900, they had a petrol-electric fire pump! Among many other innovations, Berlin was also one of the first to adopt CAFS and make a CAFS system standard on all their pumpers.

Having operated normal control MAN equipment for years, the service decided to specify these low profile cabs when the next generation Mercedes forward control units were ordered, but they later reverted to buying MAN forward control units with standard height cabs - although they did acquire several TLs on Iveco low profile chassis.
