ERF bodywork and fitted with Waterous mid mounted pump, roof mounted monitor and Cummins engined. Sold to West Yorkshire 1976 and then after service there ended up at Fire Service College.

There were very few ERF pumps with mid mounted pumps like this. I believe one or two were delivered to Australia and/or New Zealand. Waterous is a US pump manufacturer of pumps. I always thought it was a great name for a pump manufacturer, but it was actually the family name of the founder.

Ed: some British manufacturers used Waterous pumps for export models. One or two on this site. picture 34396

Looking at the layout of this example and the white roof, I can’t help thinking it might have been a canceled antipodean order?

Could also be the work of some bright young graphic designer who wanted it to stand out at the show !

Possibly - although I would hardly think sloshing white paint on the roof was an example of something to credit as graphic design!

My thought was that before 1975 both Australia and New Zealand bought quite a few ERF chassis/cabs, but these always had local bodies with Waterous pumps - including mostly mid mounts. By then, UK dual purpose appliances were generally no longer built with mid mount pumps, but had rear mounts with side deliveries and control panels. One possibility which occurs to me is that this exhibition model was perhaps intended to show authorities in those countries a complete bodied ERF pumper design in line with their preferred layout, paint scheme and pump equipment. Selling complete units would of course have been better business than just selling chassis/cabs, if the idea had actually worked...Just an idea!

Petros: A nice example of an earlier ERF chassis cab with local body and Waterous kmid mounted pump. Note the addition of the characteristic “roo bar” for protecting the crew from errant kangaroos!
