With its extensive forests, brush and hill country France has more than 4,000 4x4 and 6x6 brush pumpers and tankers, actually outnumbering the fleet of structural fire pumpers operated by the Departmental fire and rescue services. In addition to Renault trucks, imported MAN and Mercedes’ Unimog chassis are present in large numbers as well as a few Iveco. These units vary in size, with tanks from 1,000 to 6,000 litres on two axles and between 7,000 and 12,000 on three, plus 13,000 litre 8x4 tankers in some places.

Woodland and forest fires in any country can grow to enormous proportions and require the deployment of as many as 200 brush pumpers and ancillary units, as evidenced recently in the US, Australia, Greece and other countries. The French Departments have independent fire services, but a very high level of standardization of equipment and SOPs, which makes interdepartmental co-operations easier.

All of them have numerous brush trucks, totaling over 4,000 - and the Marseille military fire service has 43 of its own brush and tanker units. The BSPP is the only service without any, although they do operate nine light 2,000 litre capacity’s water tenders on 4X4 chassis which have limited off road capabilities which are intended to be useful at vegetation fires as well as less accessible structure fires in outer response areas.
