British Fire & Rescue Company Chile Leyland
We are The British Fire & Rescue Company (14th) in Santiago, Chile, a Volunteer Fire Company founded by members of the Anglo-Chilean Community in 1958.- We have just recovered our old 1963 Leyland fire truck that we plan to restore for our 50th anniversary celebrations next year. The truck was still on duty until 5 years ago in a small community after we dismissed it from city services in 1980. The truck was built by Leyland and Angus based on our own design. We would like to ask the member's help as there as several parts that are missing which are impossible for us to find in Chile.

Brian, why don't you post a list here of the parts that you need. It is interesting to see that your Leyland has survived for so long in service and is still looking good.

This appliance was built by Fire Armour in London before they became involved with HCB (that was in 1964). Unfortunately no Fire Armour records survive though I do have some original works photos--non of which have any notes as to their identity! The Union flag in the panel over the cab is not original --it used just to say "FIRE"

Chile may be unique in that all of its 17 million population - including everybody in Santiago, with a population of over 5 million - are protected exclusively by unpaid volunteer fire companies.
With some 43, 000 members, there are more than 900 individual volunteer fire companies operating out of over 1, 000 fire stations. Close to 20% of the personnel are females.
This means there are around 250 firefighters per 100, 000 citizens, around 3.4 times as many as in the UK - which demonstrates what can be achieved if a country operates an all volunteer service!

The British and Commonwealth company # 14 is one of 22 volunteer fire companies in the city of Santiago itself. Their equipment these days does not include any British trucks. Their pumper is a Renault (which are very popular amongst Chilean fire services) and an enormous and extremely impressive American Crimson Heavy Rescue truck.

This LEYLAND Fire engine is to be restored starting in 2021. The 14th received a Ferrara MPV Pumper/ Rescue Truck in 2020 and funds were earmarked towards its cost. One can visit www.14.cl for information in Spanish on its fire trucks past and present.

Good news Neil - it is almost certainly unique and as such it will be well worth restoring.
