I see Hull has finally got around to replacing its famous 45 meter Leyland Metz TTL after decades of making do with stubby little 30 metre successors!

picture 29132 has the 1936 Leyland Metz 45 metre ladder, which saw service With Hull Fire Brigade until it was replaced by a 30 meter Merryweather AEC in 1961. It is suggested that this very unusual ladder was preserved in the early 1970s but I don't know if it still survives. 45 metre TTLs were not very common. I believe Chicago had two Mack-Metz 45 metre ladders after WWII, later replaced by Japanese Morita 40 metre ladders, which were themselves eventually replaced by more conventional Pierce 30 metre units.

A bit of further digging reveals that the Chicago 45 metre ladders were actually Magirus on Mack chassis. Magirus also sold a few 30 metre ladders in the USA on Mack CF chassis, but as far as I can tell the two Chicago 45 meter ones were the only ladders of this size ever sold in the US. BTW does anyone know why Hull needed - and still seems to need - a 45 metre aerial, after a gap of fifty eight years without one?
