Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Scania

The Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue service has several new Scania appliances in their fleet. Fire station Nairn has two of them, Inverness is becoming also new ones. This one I saw at the workshop in Inverness. On the yard there were five of these. It's a Scania P270 with a Emergency One bodywork.

What happened the two new MAN 14.264 E-One appliances which replaced the two Mercedes appliances at Nairn? Does anyone know where they have been re-assigned to?

Added by Bryan Sweeney on 18 October 2007.
I think they will find another station for them. The appliance from Beauly, a Mercedes Ecoliner, is rather old. The crew I have spoken to said they are getting a newer one. Perhaps one of the MAN's ??

nairn does not have these appliances. the scanias that nairn currently run are older and are the first to be introduced into the brigade registered Y882 VST and Y883 VST from 2000

Hi, I saw two Scania's standing in the garage when I passed it, so I was thinking they were the new ones.. Sorry about that. But didn't had Nairn two Man's in the garage before the Scanias ?????

Added by Mars on 22 October 2007.
yeah they did have two man's but swapped to the scanias around a year ago

Im glad H&S have these scania's now. If central would only start using them Scotland would be conquered by Scanny!

Why did they take away the badge on the front though??

The machine above is B51 stationed in Ullapool, Wester ross. Arrived 2 weeks ago and is giving heavy rescue coverage for the north west highlands.

Amazing! A brand new scania appliance in Ullapool. My, how times have changed. Okay its 1 year old but i thought stations in far out places were given the old run in machines. Would love to see this in action. Still be as new in 3 years due to the lack of turnouts i would have though (or am i being naive)?

Buzz, not so as Strathclyde has a some MANs, volvos and scanias of various ages, H+I have volvo, MAN, merc and scania, Dumfries has scania, dodge, volvo and the only 3 DAF's in Scotland, Fife only run Volvo's, the same with Central and, Tayside has a mixture of scania and volvo, with Lothian and Borders the only brigade to run all scanias.

I think the MAN's are part of the governments allocation to the whole county which are strategically placed at different brigades. SFR volvo's are quite old now and they have recently bought many new scanias. They do also have some mercs i believe for the outlying areas, which incidently are fabulous looking machines which wouldn't look out of place in the quiter suburban areas. The DAF's are a joke as fire engines. D&G would have been better buying the mercs!

So where are you based buzz to deserve a spanking new machine?. We have always had brand new machines when we get them, why should it be any different, we all do the same job yeh. This machine is brand new but plated 07. Only been on station 2 months. We had an N reg merc, then a 55 plate Man and now the 07 plate Scania. We will be providing heavy rescue support covering the north west coast of scotland from gairloch to possibly Durness which is a large area when the Inverness ET stops in March. Think this machine will do the job very well.

its nice to see retained stations getting brand new appliance. im from nairn and we have two scanias but they are older ones from 2000. the first ones in the brigade. they are still 2 very nice looking appliances thought and run without a fault. where are you from allan fraser?

Added by The Man on 06 January 2008.
Not saying you dont deserve a new machine, simply saying how i thought far flung places were usually given older already used machines. My original comment was highlighting how things have changed, or perhaps how my perception of the way appliances are allocated has changed! Huge area to cover, im sure the Scania wont let you down. Incidently, was the MAN not a wee 7.5t motor - the scania is the real deal with plenty of room in the crewcab, and the air-ride suspension is fantastic. I see H&I have opted for emergency one bodywork. Do H&I still build their own?

central does have some scannys reserve and operational at the grangemouth complex buzz

Added by Rich(larbert fire cadets) on 19 November 2008.
In reference to Buzz on the 4th of January, there is one ODPM pm (WX54VWJ) in Strathclyde, but there is two compact WrL's on the run as VSU's in Blackwaterfoot(SF04YFA) and Lochranza(SF04YEY).
In reference to Rich, Central does not own or operate any scania appliances at this moment in time(this could change, but unlikely) the ones you refer to at Grangemouth are owned and operated by the INEOS company as their emergency response team.

anyone know what fort augustus runs with??

Added by Darren on 03 December 2008.
Rich is right central has a scanny skid trainer and co-owns the ineos scannys

Added by Rg on 19 April 2010.
If I remember correctly, the central skid trainer was the old Heavy Rescue Tender from Newcraighall that belonged to L&B.
