In March 1999, a truck fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel led to 39 deaths and 14 additional casualties. Since then, the Tunnel Fire Department has acquired some of the most elaborate custom design fire appliances anywhere to minimize the risk of similar such incidents in the future. This 35 ton 540 BHP 8X2 with three steering axles and a low profile cab is a recent example of some of the kit which they have designed and had built to cater to the special risks of this 11.6 kilometre long tunnel.
