Dacia was a government owned car factory building the old Renault 12 in Romania during the Cold War era. After 1990, they built various local versions of Renault products until the firm was acquired by Renault in 1999.

Now the firm exports its products widely, including back to France. Its recent history is rather similar to the story of Skoda, a Czech company which is a division of Volkswagen.

Dacia was the original Latin name for the Roman province which ended up as modern Romania.
