Many fire brigades send spare unused fire appliances on secondment to the Fire Service College. Sometimes vehicles get donated on a permanent basis. My local brigade, Staffordshire, have done for many years. So I imagine a brigade such as London would have the resources to do so in spades.

The Shelvoke has a small portable pump. I have seen a lot of photos of London dual purpose appliances of this era, and it seems some of them carried a PP when they were not equipped with an escape ladder, but not all of them had one.

Do any London experts know why and when they had them? PPs were typically a feature of water tenders used in rural communities to access open water sources, so their installation on big city appliances does seem a bit strange.

The pre '65 LCC Brigade held Home Office issued Coventry Climax LWPs, painted green, as 'non-mobile specials' issued to alternate stations and only carried when ordered. Generally used for flooding or salvage work. They were carried on a frame attached to the escape mounting. Post '65 many of the out of area stations absorbed by the GLC continued to carry LWPs as standard stowage for rural water supplies and were normally silver painted.
This Shelvoke was originally a DP machine with trunnion/push-in escape mounting and converted in service to carry the 135 ladder. The trunnion bar is still in place, with the outer ends cut off, for the express purpose of carrying the LWP frame. So this raises the question..why is the portable pump carried in a cut out hole where the nearside pump panel used to be? Even more sinister..Where is the main fire pump? I can't see it, can you?
I think a bit of butchery has taken place here and I would be interested to hear more.

Gents, I have been informed on good authority that this is in fact a FSPG training day at Moreton and this is an ex-London Shelvoke. The give away is the small ‘FIRE’ Sign at the rear which is certainly not a London thing.
The LPP is not in a cut away but on the tray where the left hand Escape ladder wheel would have been behind the foot loads to access the roof. GYW628W star of London’s Burning has this modification too.

Kyle: Thanks for the clarification! As for the JCDD requirement that all pumps carry a PP, I wonder when this was introduced? I remember several urban Northeastern brigades which did not carry any on either their dual purpose appliances nor water tenders, including Darlington, Newcastle & Gateshead, Middlesborough, Sunderland and York during the 1950s, 60s and early 70s. Durham county did, of course, but only on water tenders. At that time the county brigades were responsible for a lot of rural and semi-rural areas, so the PP made a lot of sense.

Perhaps it was after the AFS was abolished, because until then a lot of fire stations had an AFS EP with a PP, which they could have had access to if the PP was an urgent necessity?

This picture was taken at the fire service preservation group's 25th anniversary rally at chasewater Staffordshire. We organised a exercise, using the preserved railway on site, for any members who wished to take part hence the eclectic mix of appliances.
