American 4X4 light trucks like this were often thought ideal by Swiss rural fire services, as 4X4 was mandatory in winter conditions and very useful off road at any time. They were big enough to have a useful payload, but small enough to be manageable in typical road and urban street conditions. Rather than fitting crew cabs, this type of unit was quite often paired with a Land Rover, which would transport the crew and sometimes also a few items of additional equipment.

In other cases, this would turn out first with two or three crew and the second unit to follow along would be a "full size" pump water tender like the MB1113 in this photo - with another six crew members. As Swiss fire services outside of large towns were and still are volunteer, this meant the first unit could get going without waiting for additional personnel to turn up, and did not require a driver to have a HGV license.
