The TLF8 was a DIN standard specification. On an 8 ton 2X4 or 4X4 chassis it had a standard factory two door cab, a rear mounted PTO driven 800 LPM pump and an 1800 liter water tank. They had limited locker space and did not usually carry a hose cart or ground ladders. They were mainly used by small volunteer fire companies instead of the larger 24/50 water tenders on 16 ton chassis, which were of course a lot more expensive. They were essentially a support unit to bring additional water to the first responding pumpers, before a hydrant or open water source could be accessed.
TLF8s were mainly to be found on Opel or Mercedes chassis, but other 8 ton chassis like this Borgward were also quite common. As the TLF16/24 with a six seat crew cab became increasingly popular, the TLF8/18 died out -because it gradually became superfluous.
