VTU = vehicle for every use, and this comprehensive description pretty much sums up the idea that this type of van could indeed be put to good use in (almost) any situation. As well as general station runabouts, they were used to ferry personnel around, check out AFAs and attend a wide variety of non urgent calls, such as the proverbial cat in a tree, etc. The usual SOP was just to throw any item which might be useful equipment - given the nature of the call - in the van, and turn out with one, two or three crew members.

Many SDIS now operate German style dedicated minor alarm vans, with a comprehensive load of quite varied items of equipment pre-loaded on board, but some still prefer the VTU approach to this day...
