Gugumus built wood and later steel 18 meter ladders, which were probably the closest European counterpart to the British 50, 55 and 60 foot wheeled escape ladders. German Magirus built long wheeled ladders too, but these were much heavier and needed to be trailered behind a fire truck. Unlike the UK, the Gugumus ladders were very rarely carried on appliances which were equipped with pumps, and were commonly found on Renault Galeon and similar light truck chassis which usually had a four seat cab and carried very little equipment except the ladder itself.
