Only 6.5 meters long and 2.3 wide, the big advantage of these compact water tenders (FPTL) is their ability to access ancient sections of French towns and villages which were never built for full-size fire trucks. Compared to the normal FPT, this unit has between 50% and 80% of the capacity of the full size truck. The chassis is 10 instead of 15 tons, the cab seats six instead of eight, the pump is either 1000 or optionally 1500 LPM compared to 2000, the water tank is 2000 liters compared to 3000/3500, and only one hose cart is hung on the rear.

In addition, the locker space is of course limited, so items like the portable generator are not carried. Routinely, though, the FPTL responds along with a FPT and an aerial to any reported structure fire, even if the accompanying units can sometimes not get in close to the incident.
