This town of 109,000 inhabitants has one full time fire station and five volunteer fire companies. Like many others towns this size, the fire service operates several TLs, including both compact and full size units. They are now either Mercedes or MAN.

This old mechanical ladder has a crew cab, hose cart for 75mm hose and a hose reel for 52mm hose too. These are all features which have long since disappeared from German aerials.

The full time station, built at a cost of over 23 million Euros, has five buildings with stalls for 32 vehicles, and is staffed by 96 firefighters working a three watch system. The five volunteer fire stations are crewed by around 250 unpaid volunteer firefighters.

As usual in German cities, the full time fire service operate several EMS vehicles - although other agencies in the city also provide both professional and volunteer EMS and medical patient transport - while the volunteers efforts are concentrated on fire, rescue, hazmat and technical support roles. Last year, the combined full time and volunteer personnel attended 17,000 incidents, the great majority being EMS calls.
