Bomb disposal is one of a number of activities entrusted to fire services in Germany, which are often the task of separate agencies in many other countries. Others include emergency medical service, pollution control and environmental safety, hazmat and nuclear safety regulation and incident response, flood control, animal rescue, collapse rescue, water rescue and a wide range of safety and life saving duties.
Bomb disposal remained a frequent task for many years in major cities like Hamburg, which were extensively bombed in WWII, and unexploded bombs still crop up in the city from time to time.
