Hamburg has 86 volunteer fire companies staffed by over 2,600 operational unpaid volunteers in addition to 23 full time staffed fire stations. They operate a total of 340 vehicles and trailers, including 171 pumps, pump rescue and pump water tenders. Last year they responded to over 10,000 alarms including more than 7,000 fires - representing over 60% of the fires attended by the full time members. Depending on location, they act as either first due company or in a backup role.
They also attended 1, 650 general service alarms and provided cover by relocating to full time stations on more than 1,700 occasions.
