Leipzig with just under 600, 000 population has six full time fire stations with some 700 full time paid personnel - and 22 volunteer fire companies staffed by close to 1, 000 additional unpaid operational on call volunteers.

Unlike many German cities, Leipzig has decided to standardize its rescue pumps, instead of assigning less comprehensive specification units to the volunteers. The only exceptions are a handful of smaller units on a short wheelbase chassis with narrower bodywork for a few companies with very old village centers with exceptionally narrow streets and tight corners.
