Munich - population 1,540,000 - has ten full time fire and ambulance stations, twelve additional full time ambulance stations and 22 volunteer fire companies. Most of the latter are located in the outer suburbs. Full time riding staff number 1,700, working a three shift system, and are supported by close to 1, 000 operational on call unpaid volunteers.

The service operates 298 fire, rescue and EMS vehicles, 81 of which are stationed at volunteer fire company locations. Last year average daily alarm runs for the fire and rescue vehicle fleet amounted to 71 alarms (including volunteer call-outs) - of which 20 were fires. The EMS units were called out an average of 171 times a day. The fire and rescue fleet are a typical combination of Iveco, MAN and Mercedes brands, but there are also a few Scanias, including a five axle 53 meter Bronto Skylift. This is one of only a handful of such monster platforms in Germany.
