This city of 610, 000 inhabitants is protected by five principal fire stations (staffed by approximately 400 full time paid operational fire fighters working three shifts) and 23 additional smaller fire stations - with close to 1, 000 unpaid operational on call volunteers.
Station number one, illustrated here, was rebuilt in 1950 after being largely destroyed in WWII. In addition to these two rescue pumps, it houses a TL, a command van and a minor alarm van. The MAN is an 18 ton rescue pump with Lentner bodywork. It has a 2000 LPM pump, 2000 liter tank and CAFS. It is one of eight acquired in 2013. One is assigned to each full time station as the first due pump, the other three are reserve units.
The 18 ton Mercedes Axor has a basically identical specification, with Magirus bodywork, and is the second due pump. In practice, it turns out behind the TL to assist in facilitating optimal TL positioning. These date from 2006, one at each full time station and a sixth at one of the volunteer fire stations.
Both types have crew seats for seven, and a very comprehensive equipment load for fire, rescue and technical service incidents.
