In many places dedicated hose layers are becoming relatively rare, except for the compact 4X4 units used for forest and brush fires, which usually also have a portable pump or a trailer pump. One reason is the Dutch Hytrans system, which includes 6000 meters of 150mm hoses carried on a hose container, forming part of the load which also includes the hydraulic floating pump. The LDH can of course be used for relays with or without deploying the pump.
The second reason is that dedicated hose layers are used relatively rarely, so in many places they were already changed over to pods some time ago. This transition is just now happening in France, where the BSPP in Paris uses both older dedicated hose trucks and newer pods. A feature of both types is that they combine 2000 meters of 110mm LDH with tanks for 2000 liters of class B foam compound and foam making equipment - which makes them a tad more useful than if they were exclusively hose wagons.
