I remember these unusual appliances. I seem to remember them being painted red and also a day-glow pinky orange. Not sure if they all began life in fluorescence, before turning traditional or they came as a mix.

In the mid-‘80s, a (red) Benson-bodied version was based at A4-Erdington fire station in north Birmingham as an Emergency Tender. It had a Federal Q type mechanical siren positioned on the front grille just above the bumper. I believe it was quite unique, because at the time, WMFS were still very much a two-tone-air brigade, TWIN two-tone-air no less! None of this electronic rubbish! Ah... them were the days.......

Curiously, in the early ‘90s, WMFS workshops converted them into Pump Rescue Ladders, as the arrival of the Prime Mover pod system rendered them redundant. They were given ‘Q’ registration plates and sent out to prove themselves. Sadly they couldn’t, and soon ended up at the training school.
