VDJ319 Land Rover ex St Helens hose layer
passed to Merseyside in 1974 and here appears to be part of Speke (John Lennon) airport fire service which was municipal at this point. It was white with red stripe whilst at St Helens as a hose layer. Picture on Flickr.

Bob: small hose layers were indeed not a common sight in the UK, although of course Bath had a Bedford Hawson van which was used for this purpose for some years.
In France, where brush and forest fires are very predominant, small 4X4 hose layers are however very common, although these too are quite a lot bigger than this Land Rover. They are often also equipped with a trailer pump, so the crew can operate an intermediate relay pump if necessary.
I think there may be one or two photos of this kind of rather interesting type of rig on this site.
As for Land Rovers, they are still used by many SDIS and the BMPM, but usually as command vehicles or personnel transporters rather than brush pumps, as French brush pumps have >1,000 liter tanks, but a few are used as GRIMP high angle rescue trucks...

Hi Rob, sorry to correct you, Bath had a Commer hose
layer, your picture shows an ex Gloucestershire Fire
Brigade vehicle I think they were used as hose reel tenders.

I only ever saw this once, from the rear, so for some reason I thought it was a Bedford.
Brain cells were obviously weakening, even back then!
Still, it seems smallish hose tenders like this were indeed few and far between, much less Land Rovers in this role...

Photo 28848 on this site shows a French 4X4 hose layer, although this particular example was converted from a former brush pumper, while most others seem to be originally fabricated as hose layers.
BTW, the French Forestry Fire Service does still operate a lot of Land Rovers as small brush units, but these are being replaced these days by Mazda, Nissan and Toyota pickup trucks. Unlike pubic fire services, their vehicles are painted yellow, and some examples can be seen on the France section on this site.
