Cardiff Turntable Ladder rescue
South Glamorgan Fire and Rescue Service 1985 Dodge G series/Angloco/Metz DL30 Turntable Ladder allocated to Cardiff Central fire station seen on 3rd August 1994 at the rescue of a construction site worker in Westgate Street, Cardiff who was injured in a fall from height. This photo actually demonstrates how NOT to position a rear mount aerial appliance unless it cannot be avoided. Ideal placement should see the turntable placed as close to the base of the building, or objective as possible to maximise ladder “projection” (reach, both vertical and horizontal).
However, there are occasions when this is just not possible, so the driver/operator (seen sat at the turntable controls) has to cope as best they can.

Thanks for this interesting action photo and your informed commentary as an experienced ladder operator.
Fortunately it does not look like the full extension of the ladder was necessary in this particular case, but I guess that when it comes to a rescue like this you do whatever you have to do...
What this does also illustrate is that there are some very necessary situations where only an aerial can get the job done - and as we know the numbers of aerials is still being cut to the bone in the UK fire service.
