Now running one pump and one van.

When I lived in Solihull in 1977, the town had three pumps, a snorkel and an emergency tender - which was pretty much the average for a town with a population of around 80,000.

What I am wondering is whether all those appliances - and the crews manning them - were just an outrageous waste of money back then. Or is the current setup just an outrageous gamble that such a low level of fire response will never prove to be the making of another disaster?

The latter, Rob, definitely the latter.

I remember attending an open day here in 1985 (I believe!). On-the-run then was a Dennis RS pump ladder, an ERF 84 pump ladder, and an ERF Simon SS263 hydraulic platform.

The same ERF HP was there when I lived in Solihull, but I don't really remember details of the rest of the line up - although a mixture of Dennis and ERF seems familiar. I think the ET may have been a Bedford.
