HKT117D Commer/HCB WrT Kent K2 type 1966

early 1970s All Kent firemen were invited to submit suggestions for incorporation into the design of a new pumping appliance in 1964. The result was the Commer VAKS / HCB-Angus known as the K2, the first of which went on the run at Dartford in 1965. This 1966 example (HKT 117D) was one of a batch built on the VBKW chassis.

Late Alastair Collins collection - used with permission.

Asking the actual users is a very good idea.

In the US it is very common practice among volunteer fire companies, as they often have specific needs based on the risk characteristics of their response areas. Specification variables like pump size, tank size, hose load, ladder load, foam and/or CAFS, crew accommodations, rescue equipment including special rescue requirements - all result in a wide variety of tailor made engines, tankers, ladders, quints, rescues and multipurpose combinations being built for different fire company priorities.

Even big city full time departments often have a variety of customized units rather than a fleet of standard vehicles.

There are loads of examples, but one that immediately comes to mind is Philadelphia, which has three of its pumpers equipped as foam tenders as well as having a full pumper specification.
