I rather like the Scania’s new face. About time too.

Has Cleveland ever actually done any research to define whether there are any real safety benefits to its pale face paint scheme?

A few brigades, including most recently Grampian, have tried white painted appliances over the yeas, but none continued it for very long.

Well no one's run into one for a while!! I like my local brigade's colour scheme and think it looks smart.

The white front is historic. A Rochdale CFO moved to one of the Durham brigades that ended up in Cleveland and took the white front with him. See the Rochdale Museum ET for detail.

Rob ... When the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was formed in 2013, a decision was made that all Scotland's appliances would be coloured red. Had the national service not been created from Grampian FRS and the other seven former local authority Services, there is every likelihood that Grampian would have continued with white. There are still a considerable number of legacy white appliances in Grampian but as they are replaced, the replacements are red. In time, genuine white Scanias and MANs will be as rare in preservation circles as Coventry Yellow appliances are today.

White fronts were introduced in 1971 following the CFO's visit to the USA. He saw red and white appliances there, and adapted the livery back home. The first two appliances to get white fronts were a pair of AECs (AXG2/29K), and was then applied to the rest of the fleet. On Teesside in the 70s there were visibility problems under the then new orange Street lights, and the white fronts helped with this.
