Lancashire bought forty Ford D series appliances, as was the largest buyer in the UK.
The D1617 was the first to have the Perkins V8 diesel engine, and was based on a standard Ford 16 ton chassis, previously badged as a D1000.
Ford SVO then offered the D1317, which was a specially engineered chassis with the V8 in a 13 ton chassis, as this was a shorter wheelbase and fire brigades did not really need a 16 ton GVW for a water tender type appliance.
A few 1617s continued to be supplied to fire services, mainly for Snorkels - which needed the heavier capacity chassis.
The Perkins V8 was also used by Dodge, Dennis, ERF and Shelvoke in their fire appliance chassis, so a brigade could easily end up operating different brands with the same engine.
