Canning Town FS Dennis N types
1926 Dennis N series Braidwoods AN 1785 AN 3000 AN 3333. AN 3333 was the first WHFB appliance fitted with a Tamini pump, whereas the earlier N series had Gwynne pumps. The fireman standing is William Mackay Clelland, who received multiple injuries on the first day of the Blitz in 1940. He is probably on watchroom duty here, not riding the appliances.

One reason was that horse drawn wagons were still being used quite extensively, and cast-off horseshoe nails were strewn all over the roads, making punctures a significant problem.
By 1930 though pneumatic tires were pretty much universal, although a few fire brigades still insisted on solid cushion tires. The toughness of truck tires had been improved, and the nail risk diminished as fewer and fewer dray horses were being used.
In addition, quite a few brigades upgraded their older units with pneumatic tires, which improved comfort, made for better handling and helped both traction and braking performance.
