Another stunning Studebaker!

It seems that almost every volunteer fire company on Long Island used to have a dedicated searchlight truck in the 1950s and 60s - and quite a few are still preserved.

I suspect this may be because a lot of them did not get much heavy usage.

They have now completely disappeared from front line fleets, I guess because lighting technology has changed so much that you don't need anything this big any more.

Some German fire companies still operate a dedicated lighting truck, but these are now based on small pickup trucks - and more often the light unit (if any) is simply a two wheel trailer.
