Very good looking ladder. I presume its from Magirus. We have a new ladder from Iveco Magirus too. It was delivered in july this year. Its built on Mercedes - Benz Atego 1529 Volunteer fire department Velenje - Slovenia
Hello all, thanks for the nice comments. It is a Magirus DLK23-12CS on a Mercedes 1829LL chassis. This appliance is one of four London are taking. They will be based at Paddington, Soho, Clapham and Old Kent Road fire stations.
Fozaib - do you refer to the green appliances I saw at the Magirus factory for Saudi and Qatar? Very impressive looking machines I thought....
Hi Fozaib, Do you by any chance have a pictures of a green example for Saudi that you would be prepared to post please ? I can remember that many years ago Saudi had a batch of Dennis pumps that were blue.

Hi Ian, no i've not got any picture's of a green fire appliance, but will look in to it.
One reason the Econic is so popular for aerials, ladder towers and platforms is that it has a nice low cab.
This makes for a lower overall height and a lower center of gravity, which improves handling. The 6X2 version has a rear steering axle which makes it more maneuverable - and London's ALPs have this feature.
A rear steer two axle version is also available, which is amazingly maneuverable and can even be driven on the diagonal! Examples in use in Germany can be seen on Youtube.
Te Econic chassis was originally developed for garbage trucks, with the low profile cab providing easy access and egress for the crew, who need to get in and out very frequently. Because it is in front of the engine, it also offers walk across access and seating for three crew members, which is another advantage for those fire services which operate their trucks with three crew.
A handful of brigades operate Econics as pumpers or rescues with crew cabs. This makes them longer than most typical Atego or similar units, but does retain the advantage of a lower overall height...
The new generation TL for London is being build in Ulm right now. 12 M32L-AS on a low liner Scania and 3 m64L, yes 64 meter!on a 4 axxle Scania chassis
Still less expensive that making sure buildings like the Grenfell Tower are built to fire safe construction standards, BUT not really a solution.
Three giant platforms cannot reasonably provide adequate response times to high rise residential buildings scattered all over the London area, and these 64 meter rigs are so big that in many cases they are unlikely to be able to get near enough to several such structures to be of any practical value once they do eventually arrive on scene.
Let's hope that all concerned realize this is a stop gap and temporary solution - not an answer to fixing the numerous deathtraps which remain in daily use in London...
In the meanwhile, LFB may well take a leaf out of the books of fire services in North America, Europe and even most Middle Eastern countries, not to mention Japan.
In these countries, a residential night time high rise first alarm assignment is four to six pumps, two or three aerials, a rescue squad and additional special rigs and officer's cars and/or command vans with around 35 to 50 personnel.
I completely agree about your point regarding standoff distances and working height, BUT these three monster aerials are being bought specifically to provide additional vertical reach in an effort to cope with high rise building fires.
It really is only a very partial answer to the real problem of fire codes and enforcement, and typically relied on in third world countries where building codes are compromised or even completely ignored.
I just hope nobody in government is under the impression that when these are placed in service it will be a moment to rejoice and say "problem solved" because it won't be.
My other concern is London's still feeble response protocol for night time occupied residential high rise structures. Even with proper codes, the service needs adequate resources on site at the first alarm, and London is sending around half of the numbers of personnel which respond in many other countries....
Rob, What do you regard as adequate first response for a night time occupied high rise? What resources and what response time. My understanding in WYFRS is six vehicles: four/ five pumps, one/ two aerials. No response time specified....This (increased response) was introduced after the Grenfell disaster.
There is no "global" standard, and practice varies from city to city not only in England but in other countries too.
Overall, it seems that four to six pumps, two or three aerials, a heavy rescue squad, a BA and/or dedicated High Rise tender, a command unit, two or three senior officers, at least one ambulance and a significant police response are about average.
The number of fire service responders is therefore around 45 to 50 - which as I understand it is around twice the response which London has now decided to be appropriate.
Response times also vary, but most seem to fix on five minutes for the first unit(s) and ten to twelve for the complete first alarm assignment.
My own experience of a day time response to the 44 floor building in Chicago where I live was five engines, three aerials, a rescue squad, a snorkel, a high rise tender, three chief officers and one ambulance. Total CFD personnel 55, plus around eight police officers.
I did not measure response time, but my impression was that everyone was on site in less than ten minutes or so...
London's high rise response is 5 pumping appliances, and an aerial appliance. If the incident is persons reported/multiple calls it automatically goes to 15 pumping appliances, multiple Fire Rescue Units and 2 aerial appliances.
