Just this morning had a visit to London Road Fire Station in Manchester which has been locked up for over 30 years. I've taken a series of detail photographs of the building so leave a comment if you would like to see more.
Am I correct in thinking that PE is Pump Escape, SNO is Station Officer, TL Turntable Ladder, ET Emergency Tender and ST Salvage Tender?

Yes I would agree with PAV 'SNO' is snorkel...I guess the circular panel in the ceiling is a blocked up pole drop ?
I only went on London Road once during an FBU demonstration in Greater Manchester..what an iconic building it was then and still is despite being empty for over 30 years..I hope the redevelopment that is proposed retains this wonderful buildings unique atmosphere/character ?
I always thought this building should have been the home of a 'National Fire Museum'..along with hotel accommodation.
There is a book published about London Road called 'The Finest Fire Station In This Whole Round World'...how true....unless anyone can suggest differently ?

Yes can you post more photos please Steve. (How did you get access?). I was in Manchester two weeks ago and took some photos of the outside of this, one of Manchester's many fine Edwardian buildings. It was a magnificent triangular building with an ambulance and police station, accommodation for the crews, and a coroner's court amongst other things (including a bank!).
From an age when our powers that be showed pride in public services.

I would love to see some more pictures Steve. I used to visit this station when I was a young lad. It was very happy days. Thanks for sharing.

Just a update the SNO was the Bedford TK Simon Snorkel with an unusual low line chassis and yellow boom. Very innovative in its day many happy holidays visiting a friend Steve Millward on ue Watch at E50

Rick I think the old Singapore central fire station takes the biscuit. Not sure if there is a photo on this site, but if you look up Singapore Civil Defence you can see it. It is quite amazing! There is a long video of the Manchester station on YouTube, including interviews with firemen who lived and worked there, taken shortly after it was closed.
