OXT779 in one her old haunts, today F24 Shoreditch, but back in 1964 was coded B27. Getting ready for a busy year next year with the LFB's 150th celebrations.
This is the ET which attended the multiple fatality arson hotel fire in Maida Vale in the 70s, when it was on the roster as a reserve - and stationed at Paddington on that fateful night.
Was the normal ET at Paddington in 1974 a Dennis F108. I have a Paul Slade London Model Dennis F108 ET, reg No JHX 13K with A21 sign. Or was it an AEC/Merryweather?
Paddington's regular ET at the time was ET9 338ALX, a 1961 Dennis C431 Emergency Tender. This was off the run that week in December 1974 and OXT779 was reserve ET on the run in its place. ET13 JHX13K was allocated to J27 Finchley.
In1959 this one was too early to have had the Perkins 6-354 diesel, which was introduced a few years later. With its F103 designation, it was however obviously diesel powered, but no clue as to which engine...
At the time it was delivered, I read that it had a Perkins diesel engine and - if so - it must have been one of London's first Perkins diesels.
The 6-354 was installed in the later D series compact water tenders - of which LFB bought three - as an alternative to the Jaguar 4.2 liter petrol engine. At 12O BHP, it was not as powerful as most other power units used in fire appliances at the time.
This F103 had the Perkins R6 diesel engine, which developed only 108 BHP. It was rather underpowered in a vehicle like this, and also a notoriously unreliable engine.
The numerous failures of this engine were a major reason Perkins had to be bought out by Massey Ferguson, the tractor manufacturers.
The later 6-354 was a much improved design, but still had a limited power output at 112 BHP and eventually 120.
