Unusual to see a side-mounted deck gun, especially on a quint. Most quints simply use the ladder pipe in situ if a deck gun operation is called for, as these are usually designed to be controlled remotely from the pump panel.

But some departments believe you can never have too much plumbing!

St. Louis pioneered the idea of replacing all of its pumpers with quints some years ago, and subsequently replaced its original 55 footers with 75s, like this one. The 55 foot ladders on the older quints turned out to be practically fairly useless - just like the British experiment with 50 foot snorkel/pumpers.

No other major US city has followed by buying small quints to replace pumpers. Most have quite separate pump and ladder/platform/tower apparatus, although some smaller communities operate quints as a way of saving money on manpower and/or apparatus costs.

Big city departments including New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco mostly do not operate quints at all, focusing on carrying rescue gear on their ladder - and leaving it to one of their pumpers to provide the water when they are used as water towers.
