Los Angeles Fire Department -- Engine 3
LAFD's Engine 3 is a 1999 Pierce Dash Pumper and serves the city's Bunker Hill section. This engine was one of an order of 18 placed with Pierce in 1998. The pump is 1500 gpm with a 500 gallon water tank. LAFD operates 105 Engine Companies with staffing of an officer and three firefighters.

Los Angeles City FD is one department which uses 4 inch rather than 5 inch LDH for hydrant hookup and to relay between pumpers.
The standard engine's hose load includes 750 feet of 4 inch, 750 feet of 2.5 inch with a 325 GPM branch, 400 feet of 1.75 inch with a 200 GPM nozzle, 400 feet of 1.5 inch with a 125 GPM branch and 500 feet of 1.0 inch with one or more variable output nozzles capable of delivering up to 40 GPM.
All pumps are also equipped with a 30 USG class A foam tank, and operate with a four person crew. The department does not have dedicated engine and truck companies, but instead combines units into Task Forces. This insures that the initial crews can deploy as one engine plus one truck company or as two engine companies.
A Task Force consists of a four crew pumper, a four crew ladder and a backup pumper with two additional crew members. Response to a structure fire includes a Task Force, a third Engine, a LAFD ambulance and a Chief - totaling seventeen or sometimes eighteen personnel.
The pre-plan assigns various numbers and types of additional units to the first alarm response to apartment buildings, commercial and industrial structures, institutional premises and businesses - and of course to high rise structures.
