SFFD Engine 5 -- 2006 American LaFrance

The San Francisco Fire Department recently took delivery of ten of these American LaFrance 1500 gpm pumpers built on the popular "Eagle SE" chassis. The department's original color scheme was re-introduced in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Great San Francisco Fire and Earthquake of 1906.

These Engine's have proven to be less than reliable and hence not very popular with their crews. As of 2011 they have been moved from the high call volume stations. Such a shift is unheard of for such a new appliance. SFFD expects their front line Engines and Trucks to have a service life of 25 years of which at least their first 10 will be at stations with high call volumes. Many of the old firefighters are really saddened by this because the department has been loyal to American LaFrance for decades, with only rare purchases from other manufactures.

I saw one of these turn out from the station next to the SFFD museum last month while I was on holiday in San Fransisco, the appliance still looked good in the old colour
