Minneapolis Bridge Collapse (River Rescue)

August 1, 2007 -- The Mississippi, America's longest river, is very shallow in the area of the collapse -- perhaps on 6-8 feet. Flat bottom boats, like this air boat, were used for search and recovery.

Impressive photo, catching the machine in action, at Mass Casualty Incident.
The Mississippi River being shallow here, must have saved a few lives; the vehicles on the bridge deck remaining above the water, after the collapse and
so occupants were not submerged.
I didn't realize Air Boats existed, outside of Florida Everglades swamps, and Louisiana bayous.
What are they like to operate - there must be quite a noise level from the air-cooled engine, and airplane propellor?
Regards,

I've ridden on one, and have stood on a dock, as another approached. They are rather loud, and wearing hearing protection is wise. The one I rode on just skimmed across the water surface, able to plow through tall grass shallows with ease. I've read in some states up north, they are used as ice rescue boats as well.
