The Zetos is a maximum GVW off-road chassis. And a very expensive one, too! The only other Zetos fire trucks I have ever seen were in Soutn America, where they are used as tankers.
This one looks like it has a large tank of 7000 liters or more, but its exact role is not clear.
Marseille operates 6X6 Unimogs with a 7, 000 liter tank and a crew cab as brush fire units, but these have less locker space than this Zetos. Although quite large, the Mogs are smaller than this monster - which reminds me of the old military style 6X6 fire trucks in the former Soviet Union.
which is in fact a unimog with 6x6 , no difference whatsoever apart from some cab pressings and hey presto a new model which will extract loads of money from unsuspecting fleet managers !, total unbelievable gross waste of bucks council tax money , where does the fleet manager think we live? the gobi desert?
According to the Mercedes website, the Unimog 6X6 has a GVW of 17 tonnes. But the Zetros has a much heavier GVW of 27 tonnes, and a significantly more powerful 330 BHP engine. Some of the cab panels are indeed the same, but the rest of the vehicle is entirely different from a Unimog.
The main customers for Zetros so far are the German and Bulgarian armies, and oil exploration companies, but only a few have been built as fire trucks, including Ziegler units supplied to south America. German interior ministry DIN specifications do not include any water tenders or tankers in excess of 5, 000 liters, and these are usually 4X4 18 tonne GVW Mercedes, MAN or IVECO units - so no percieved need for anything bigger and more expensive, except for airfields and some industrial brigades.
French fire services do operate quite a large number of 8X4 nurse tankers up to 13, 000 liters, but these are not required to have off-road capabilities, as the smaller front-line 4X4 pump-tankers return to them on road to replenish their tanks.
