It is the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which is independent of the mainland Hampshire FRS. IWFRS has 242 members and 10 fire stations on the island. It operates 12 front line pumps, 2 ALPs, 2 water tankers, 2 rescue units and a fleet of reserve and support vehicles. Only one station is full-time, another is day manned and the remaining eight are all 100% on-call. The island has a population of 140, 000. Their Service was rated in 2005 as two star, one of the lowest rankings in the UK, but has since improved to three, after a substantial increase in budgets and capital expenditures.
