Huge numbers of North American volunteer fire companies bought thouands of pieces of apparatus on this very popular C series chassis. Although they often had canopy crew cabs, they were more frequently built on the standard cab chassis, like this excellent example.

Firefighters could - and did - often ride on the rear step and/or the side running boards. And in many volunteer companies, personnel who were nearer to the fire than the firehouse when the call came would respond directly in their own vehicles, with their turnout gear in their own car.

This also reduced the need for a crew cab, leaving space for an additional locker ahead of the pump bay.
