some of the FDNYs ladders and heavy rescues are Ferraras. The FDNY have placed an order for new KME Pumpers.

Most likely covering up a crack filler that has to have time to cure.

This is part of a add-on order from established FDNY suppliers to replace the 56 pieces of apparatus lost to Hurricane Sandy in Oct.2012. 8 pumpers and a tower were ordered from Seagrave.This was well covered in the USA fire press.

What does Sidewalk cracks have to do with this apparatus photo? Guss they "do it better" whereever you are...

Thanks for this insight, Warren. Even though I lived on Long Island for many years and knew some Sandy victims, I did not realize the extent of FDNY's equipment losses.

Do you know if the department had enough second line units to replace the lost apparatus at the time, or were they loaned units by other surrounding departments? I remember several Long Island volunteer companies sent equipment to FDNY after 9/11, and wondered if this happened again last yaer.

Rob, 115 pieces of FDNY apparatus were damaged during the Sandy storm, according to a report published in Fire Apparatus Journal, 15 major units were damaged beyond repair. Spare and training pumpers and ladders were the majority of these, however 2 of the new Ferrara aerials were included. Over one dozen special units were also destroyed, including 4 of 6 brush truck units, 2 wreckers (including a Mack R model), and one of the last Mack CFs, Foam 321.
7 ambulances and various smaller units like SUVs made up the balance. One notable FDNY loss was the 02 Spartan Luverne pumper that was a post 9-11 donation.
Many LINY units had their own problems, such as Long Beach which reportedly had every fire rig damaged.
In New Jersey, Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken, and many coastal communities had rigs damaged/destroyed in the storm.
