Pierce Tractor Drawn Aerial Ladder -- Ladder-1
This 2007 100' Pierce TDA or tillered aerial is on the run in Wilmington, Delaware, an old east coast city about 90 miles south of Manhattan. A note regarding aerial devices in the states. This Ladder Company is made up of three firefighters and Captain. (In NYC staffing is 6) The Ladder Company's responsibility upon arrival at the fire scene is to make forcible entry for the Engine Company, begin interior Search and Rescue in advance of the hoseteam, raise ground ladders and/or the aerial device, and create a ventilation path for positive pressure ventilation. (They never touch a hose)

St. Louis is backing off from having all Quints, and has ordered Engines to replace their older and damaged Quints. They are going for a mix of Engine and Quints, and are still ordering Quints, but with 100+ aerial ladders.
Richmond, Va, has a Quint assigned to every station for structural fires, and a Rapid Response truck, or Engine, for EMS and smaller fires (car, brush, trash). The station's crew cross staff the vehicle needed for the shout.
Sandy Springs, Ga, has four Quints, and 2 Engines spread out between 4 stations. But, the majority of departments in the metro Atlanta, Ga, area, while they do have Quints run Engines first out.

In addition, many smaller departments have aerial trucks with a built-in pump, water tank and hose load, which function as pumpers or ladders, as dictated by the circumstances of the incident. St. Louis only operates these "quint" combinations, and their fire companies are all completely cross-trained.
The total separation of functions still survives in many large cities, but these are mainly older communities with large numbers of personnel.
