For our European audience, this really does beautifully illustrate how US fire departments use big hoses to move big quantities of water!

It is now standard procedure in most parts of the country to use 5" (125mm) hose for hydrant connection, whilst in most of Europe twinned or even single 65 or 70mm hose lines are the norm. The sole exception is France, where 110mm hose is used where high output hydrants are available, which is usually in large cities including Paris.

FDNY has 5" hose, but engine companies still often use 6" hard suction to hook up to hydrants. This offers even higher flows, but the pumper has to be right on top of the hydrant - which is not always easy.

In Germany, and some other central European countries, hydrant supply hoses are actually a bit fatter, at 75mm. The same diameter lines are used for exterior work, while most interior attacks are made with 52mm lines, usually fed via a wye from a 57mm hose line.
