Plaistow Fire Station 1920s West Ham Fire Brigade
to complement the picture taken in the 1930s (see picture 36458) this shows Dennis Braidwood PE in the AN registered series; Dennis John Morris Magirus TL AN6230 which claimed to be the first pneumatic tyred TL in the country on delivery 1924 - 85 foot model wooden ladder costing £2800.

THe conversion to pneumatics in the UK occured mainly during the 1920s. But many Brigades were reluctant to adopt them too quickly, because of the continuing hazard of punctures caused by cast-off horseshoe nails.
Horses continued to be employed extensively well in to the 1930s and 1940s, and some fire trucks delivered in the UK as late as 1933 continued to have solid tyres. In North America, the changeover to pneumatics tended to become universal a bit earlier, possibly because motorization of the entire commercial vehicle market was also a bit more rapid.
It is sometimes a bit tricky to date older British fire appliances, because once they had adopted pneumatics, most brigades quite quickly converted their older units from solid tyres.
