Birmingham Striker chevrons

The five recently delivered Oshkosh Striker ARFF trucks at Birmingham Airport have been fitted with chevrons on the rear lower body.
The reflective element in the graphics is set at a 45 degree angle so the light reflected back shines back horizontally instead of downwards.

Andy, thank you for that information. Forgive me if I appear a little kerfuffled, I'm not quite certain why the chevrons are there, unless it is to identify the offending vehicle if it runs over me on the fireground, , , ,

Thanks Andy, interestingly these machines lack the obligatory heavy goods vehicle reflective plates. Have they a dispensation?

Although these trucks are registered they don't seem to have a tax disc.
Could this mean that they are restricted to working within the confines of the airport and do not need to be completely road legal. Additionally they are probably over width for regular us on the road as LGV's.
I'm sure one of the many well informed viewers of this site will be able to clarify the matter.

Steve

Steve, fire appliances don't need the excise license, that is serving ones. As for the vintage DVLC seem to decide, a friend has a TACR 1 and he has been told it has to display a current disc, I have seen other vintage machines without.
I understand a lot of vintage vehicles are MoT exempt, they only need to comply with the safety regulation as to mechanical function, lighting etc.
The reason I raised the HGV question re the Oshkosh is most machines carry reflective plates unless they have a chevron system covering the whole rear. Maybe as you say someone could clarify.

A serving fire appliance does need to display a tax disc all but it will be a nil disc if it is road registered. As for some vintage appliances not displaying any sort of tax disc then I'm sure the D.V.L.A would like to know about these vehicles, if its on the road it should be displaying a VALID tax disc.

Emergency appliances that have rear reflective appliques or chevrons are not required to display the small square reflective lgv panels , they do have to display a current tax disc whether nil or otherwise.

Thanks for both for clarifying the latest in a long running saga. I have in my time served in both county and civil airport brigades after a spell in the military. The confusion, if thats what was the order of the day, saw many civilian machines carrying no excise license. That was the case with my last brigade up until I left service in 1995!
I am now in agriculture and I face the same fairly ludicrous situation of displaying a tax disc costing zilch on my machinery. I am not having a dig at either of you, just highlighting the total confusion created by DVLC. Ask a traffic policeman the current law and he will no doubt roll his eyes.
With regard to the Oshkosh and reflective plates to the rear, well I hope the AFO checks the status of his small fleet, those nice Vosa chappies can be very demanding!
Still, thanks for pointing out current practice.

The new Strikers at Manchester Airport are taking no chances on visibility from behind, they have the word FIRE in the rear ramp as the one above does but also have full HI-VIZ striping on the rear which is very impressive on the Striker as they lack the rear mounted radiator present on most ARFF trucks. They are painted in red as a fire engine should be. Interestingly (and possibly uniquely?) all six are fitted with Snozzles and they look rather wonderful! A massive investment to replace the rather rag tag and bobtail fleet of Cobra 2's and Baracudas.

Thanks for all the fantastic photos. I'm using them as I'm currently building a 14th scale radio controlled model of the number 2 Birmingham Striker and need as much info as possible.
I have already built a 14th scale model of a Gloucestershire fire appliance.
