In addition to its full-time fire service, Bochum has 15 volunteer fire companies. This Opel is an old specification LF8, of a type which was specifically designed for volunteer fire company use throughout the old Federal Republic.

Based on a standard 4 ton van, it had a front-mounted pump delivering 800 liters at 10AT, a nine-seat crew cab, extension and scaling ladders, and a basic load of 52mm and 75mm hose. It had no water tank, and many of them did not carry any BA equipment.

Although somewhat limited in capabilities, these were inexpensive and could be found even in small villages. Identical specification trucks were also built on both Hanomag and Mercedes chassis. A version which carried a portable pump in the rear compartment was quite common in volunteer fire companies which also included rural areas.
