Oh dear, Chris my sympathy, along with white front ends, never to my taste, too much like a white van, they have to ruin a classic machine with silly stickers.

I agree. It would not be so bad if all UK fire services could agree on one paint and stripe combinaton, but this is getting almost as garish as the New Zealand color scheme, which has almost every color of the rainbow and just looks really messy rather than being eye-catching.
Japan has one of the best fire services in the World (because they need to) and their trucks are red everything, with the sole exception of the white "lightning flash" on dedicated rescue trucks. It does make me wonder if these jazzy sripes ans decals are really helpful or even necessary.

Rob you made me smile as usual. To say I agree is an understatement. I also admire the Japanese brigades for the simple honesty of their setup. Both in equipment and turnout, everyone knows what is red does one job.
My other niggle is the amount of led lighting stuck onto every part of machines now. Totally unnecessary in my view, but again buyers seem reluctant to say no and producers rake in the money. I have noticed the trend towards very slim lightbars of late, they just do not give the daytime output required for safety as they are so small, often the view is obstructed by equipment.
One of my current vehicles is used for escort duties and was delivered with a slim led lightbar on the roof. Even in amber it was useless at distances over 50 yards in daylight. Off it came for two trusty halogen beacons.

I recently saw a rescue squad here with no less than twenty-five assorted lights on the back, including red, white, blue and amber. It also had the new NFPA-mandated European-style rear red and yellow chevron paint job.(And I did not include the license plate lights, either.)
It is getting to be ridiculuos.
Some departments have figured out that red lights are recognizable as the traditional emergency light color, but blue is easier to see and more distinctive at night, and is also very popular with police agencies. But in bright sunlight - which we fortunately have a lot of - a really bright white light is best. Oh, and let's not forget that amber is ideal for turn signals and traffic warning lights in a neat row on the back, just in case other drivers have not seen the red, blue and white ones.
Perhaps we should have a contest to see how many different colors of paint, striping and warning lights can be installed on one fire appliance? I already know Tokyo FRD would comes last - bless them!
