The Ladder was changed during late 1981, Devon Fire Brigade commissioned G & T Fire Control in Kent to undertake the work and the A type Merryweather Ladders were fitted from this on to a brand new Shelvoke Chassis which again was to be put operational again in Plymouth. The intention was to scrap the remaining chassis of VJY 44 but fate intervened and G & T decided to recondition this appliance at which point it was upgraded with a set of fully reconditioned type B ladders. These ladders were removed from an accident write off. VJY 44 then spent the remainder of its days deputising for brigades when their own ariel appliances were being reconditioned up and down the country.
I believe quite a few new Shelvoke long wheelbase heavy duty chassis were used to remount several old Merryweather ladders which were removed from older original chassis, but I am not sure about how many were fitted with brand new ladders….
Ed: it was a mixture. The chassis was used quite a lot for new Metz and Magirus ladders and several are on this site, e.g Cambridge. I am not aware of any new Merryweather ladders being put on S&D if that is what you mean.
