Brandweer Sittard DAF Aerial appliance

A 1982 DAF FA1300DT325 chassis with a Metz turntable ladder on it. It's a 18 metre ladder. Before it came to Sittard in 1993 this ladder was in service with the Fire brigade of Rotterdam. It went out of service with the Fire brigade Sittard in 2004.

Nice compact ladder. These small 18 meter ladders are quite common in mainland Europe, but they do not seem to have gained acceptance in the UK.

They do have many advantages in communities which do not have tall buildings, which justify fielding the more commonplace 30 meter ladders. These include lower cost and better manuverability. In some counties, they can also be driven on a passenger car licence, as the gross weight can be kept under eight tonnes. This is sometimes important when the ladder is being operated by a volunteer fire company, as virtually anyone can bring the ladder to an incident.
