Chris, what is the role of a 'Fire Patrol?

The Fire Patrol City of New York, was founded by the New York Board of Fire Underwriters in either 1835 or 1839, depending on your source material, as a paid salvage force, various Volunteer Salvage Companies had existed in New York scince 1780. The role of Salvage companies at a fire is to limit the amount of collateral damage by spreading Salvage Sheets to prvent water damage to machinery/computers etc, to remove/control excess water, (from the fire-fighting effots), to operate lifts and secure utilites. The Fire Patrol, (and British Salvage Corps), where totaly seprate from the Fire Department which is a Government Agency. The New York Fire Patrol had three Patrol Houses, Patrol 1 at 240 West 30th Street, Manhattan (Midtown), Patrol 2 at 84 West 3rd Street, Manhattan (Greenwich Village) and Patrol 3 at 10-12 Dean Street, Brooklyn. Fire Patrol Members wore standard Turnout coats, boots etc But had Red fire helmets.The Patrol responded on all First Alarm Fires in the immedediate vicinity of the Patrol Houses and special calls to all others. They also used to provied Fire Prevention education to the City's public schools. The Fire Patrol City of New York was disbanded 0n October 15th 2006. Their role being obsorbed into the Fire Department.

Other cities in the US had similar organizations, and at least one of Chicago's Fire Patrol stations is still standing, although no longer in use...
